Product Attribute Colors

Purpose

Product Attribute Colors adds Choose Colors to color-type attribute lines on a product template. The wizard lists values already defined for that attribute and lets you select the values the product uses. A colored tag widget helps distinguish the selected values in the backend.

It extends the existing product form and variant process. It does not create a separate application menu or a new storefront catalogue.

Before you start

Install eis_attribute_colors for your exact Odoo version. The reviewed 18.0 manifest depends on Product and Web (product, web), with no Enterprise-only dependency. Your hosting must permit custom server addons. Product variants must be enabled and the attribute's display type must be Color.

This is a source-reviewed guide, primarily for 18.0. No installation or variant-generation test was run during this documentation review.

Access and roles

The button and both wizard models require the native Product Variants group (product.group_product_variant). The user also needs the normal permissions to edit the product's attribute line and create attribute values. The addon does not grant unrestricted product access or define a separate color-manager role.

Have an administrator arrange the appropriate product/variant access. A visible product alone does not establish permission to change its variants.

Setup and menu

Open the existing product template form and its variant attributes. Add or select a color-type attribute. Choose Colors appears on that attribute's line; it is hidden for other display types. The selected attribute values use colored tags.

Use an existing, saved attribute line so the wizard has a definite product and attribute to update. Existing attribute values are shared reference data: selecting them for one product does not create a separate copy for that product.

Workflow

  1. Open a test product template with a Color attribute and choose Choose Colors.
  2. In Color Values → Select or Create Colors, review the existing values. Selected reflects the values currently assigned to this product.
  3. Turn Selected on for wanted values and off for unwanted ones. This determines the complete replacement selection, rather than merely adding checked rows to the old list.
  4. Add a new row when a new value is needed. Enter a name and color; the 18.0 wizard also offers an Image swatch. A new value must have a color or image. Images are constrained to 70 by 70 pixels by the field definition.
  5. Choose OK. The wizard reuses selected existing values, creates eligible new values, replaces the product attribute line's value selection and asks Odoo to update its template attribute values.
  6. Review the product's selected values and variants before using it on an order. Choose Cancel to leave without applying the selection.

Practice scenario

In an authorized test database, create a fictional “Harbor Notebook” with a Color attribute. Select an existing Navy value and add a new Ochre value with a distinct color code. Apply the wizard, then inspect the selected values and variant combinations. Reopen it and confirm that the existing choices are marked Selected. This is a source-derived exercise, not an executed result.

Troubleshooting and limitations

Choose Colors is missing: check variant access and that the attribute display type is Color. The server also rejects the wizard for a non-color attribute.

A new name becomes an existing name: the wizard detects a duplicate by its exact color-code value and reuses an existing value. It does not promise distinct names for identical color codes.

Editing an existing row did not recolor the attribute: existing rows are used as selections; the confirmation code reuses their original records. Use the native attribute-value editor with appropriate permissions for permanent edits to shared values.

Review changes to product combinations carefully. Removing a selected value changes that product's attribute selection. The guide does not promise that historic variants or existing orders will be deleted or rewritten.

Catalogue-qualified versions are 16.0, 17.0 and 18.0. The 16.0–17.0 wizard creates color-code values without the image-swatch field found in 18.0, and uses older table/view conventions. Their source differences were inspected; the complete workflow here follows 18.0.
